OIL AND PETROLEUM TECHNOLOGY

Subharti Institute of Technology & Engineering was established in 2005 with the introduction of undergraduate programme on engineering degree level in computer science, electrical, mechanical, electronic engineering and information technology. Encouraged by the response and the success of these engineering courses, SITE started Bachelor of Technology in oil & petroleum Technology specialization by the great efforts by Dr.Jayant Shekhar. The branch (oil & petroleum Technology) of engineering which deals with the exploration, recovery ,refining, development and processing of crude oils to obtain various petroleum products is known as Petroleum Engineering. Petroleum engineers explore new reservoirs worldwide and conduct research activities for inventing new technologies and methods to reduce mining expenditure and to increase productivity. Petroleum refers to crude oil and petroleum engineering is the set of activities related to the production and processing of various products such as gasoline, diesel, heating oil from crude oil.

Petroleum engineers work with geologists to understand the geologic formation and properties of the rock containing the oil reservoir, determine the drilling methods to be used and monitor drilling and production operations. They design equipment and processes to achieve the maximum profitable recovery of oil and gas. Petroleum engineers rely heavily on computer models to simulate reservoir performance using different recovery techniques. Petroleum engineering requires a good knowledge of many other related disciplines, such as geophysics, petroleum geology, formation evaluation (well logging), drilling, economics, reservoir simulation, reservoir engineering, well engineering, artificial lift systems, completions and oil and gas facilities engineering. Petroleum engineers travel deserts, mountains and cold regions of the world in order to find unexplored sources of oil. Petroleum engineers have global career and are hired by oil companies globally.

The vision of the Oil and Petroleum Technology program is to be a world-class provider of education and research for the oil and gas industry, to play a leadership role in providing new technologies in order to increase the petroleum reserves of India and all over world.

Mission

The mission of the Oil and Petroleum Technology program is to provide a modern petroleum engineering education with proper balance between theory and practice and to graduate petroleum engineers prepared for life-long learning and capable of being productive contributors for the oil and petroleum industry.

Career Scope in Future

A petroleum engineer is involved in nearly all of the stages of oil and gas field evaluation, development and production. The aim of their work is to maximize hydrocarbon recovery at minimum cost while maintaining a strong emphasis on reducing environmental impact.

Petroleum engineers are divided into several groups:

  • Petroleum geologists: Who find hydrocarbons by analysing subsurface structures with geological and geophysical methods.

  • Reservoir engineers: Who work to optimise production of oil and gas via proper well placement, production levels and enhanced oil recovery techniques. They use computer simulations to assist in the identification of risks and to make forecasts on reservoir potential.

  • Production engineers: who manage the interface between the reservoir and the well through such tasks as perforations, sand control, artificial lift, downhole flow control and downhole monitoring equipment. They also select surface equipment that separates the produced fluids (oil, natural gas and water).

  • Drilling engineers: who manage the technical aspects of drilling both production and injection wells. They work in multidisciplinary teams alongside other engineers,scientists, drilling teams and contractors.

When & How should start?

Engineering is the most hunted after class of 12th in india. Any student from 12th standard with mathematics is eligible to take admission in engineering. Diploma candidate can also take admission in B.Tech 2nd year as lateral entry. However, there is a rigorous selection procedure at place for computer engineers wherein admission to the B.E/ B.Tech courses is extremely competitive in most of the best universities like Swami Vivekanand Subharti   University. Students who are passionate about technology and machines can become an engineer by cracking engineering entrance exams. Almost some top institute,IIT’s,NIT’s and universities, in India such as Swami Vivekanand Subharti University (SVSU, Meerut) offer  graduate engineering courses in the stream of oil and petroleum  Technology.

Labs in Oil and Petroleum Technology

 

Fluid Mechanics Lab

The objective of this course is to teach students experimentally to calibrate flow meters, find pressure loss for fluid flows and determine pump characteristics. It is an introductory course where flow behaviour, fluid forces and analysis tools are introduced. The goals of the experiments include determination of forces generated when fluid flow takes place over a solid object, applications of the control volume approach, demonstration of the momentum and energy equations, viscosity measurement and engineering correlations. Intricate flow phenomena such as separations and transition to turbulence are demonstrated. Experimental setups such as flow through a tube, flow over a flat plate, wind tunnel, smoke tunnel and viscometer are made available to the students. The lab runs closely with the lectures in such a way that experiments support the text covered in the class room.

 

 

 

Mass Transfer Lab

This laboratory aims to introduce students to provide a basic introduction to the physical and thermodynamic principles of mass transfer with an emphasis on how these principles affect the design of equipment and result in specific requirements for quality and capacity.

Students will acquire knowledge on the determination of important data for the design and operation of the process equipments like distillation, extraction, diffusivity, drying principles which are having wide applications in various industries

 

Geology Lab

The different objectives and outcomes of this Lab are given as follows:-

  • Prepare civil engineering students for a career in geotechnical engineering

  • Understand the role of geology in the design and construction process of underground openings in rock.

  • Be able to apply geologic concepts and approaches on rock engineering projects.

Be able to identify and classify rock using basic geologic classification systems.

  • Be able to use the geologic literature to establish the geotechnical framework needed to properly design and construct heavy civil works rock projects.

 

Process Control and Instrumentation Lab

The different objectives and outcomes of this Lab are given as follows:-

  • To prepare the students have successful career in industry and motivate for higher education.

Petroleum engineering and Testing Lab

The objectives of this Lab are given as follows:-

On completion of the course, the students should be conversant with the theoretical principles and experimental procedures for quantitative estimation. And would be able to understand basic principles involved in testing of Petroleum products by different techniques.

Drilling Fluids and Cementing Techniques Lab

The different objectives and outcomes of this Lab are given as follows:-

  • To demonstrate the processes involved in drilling and cementing operations, introduce laboratory techniques which are used to select and optimize drilling fluids and cement slurry and to develop interest in experimentation.

  • Students able to understand the drilling fluid equipment, Principles and operation and oil well cement properties.

Petroleum Transportation Design

The different objectives and outcomes of this Lab are given as follows:-

  • To enable the students to understand the fundamental concepts of transportation equipment and machinery design.

  • To make student aware of different equipment and machineries used in petroleum industry.

  • Students would be able to understand the concepts of designing petroleum transportation equipments

Oil Field Equipment Design Drawing

The different objectives and outcomes of this Lab are given as follows:-

  • To train the students in designing of the following equipments as per IADC, API, ISME, TEMA, ISI codes and drawing according to scale

  • Drawing and design of Offshore platform TLP (TENSION LEG PLATFORM) - Fixed platform design,

  • Drawing and design of offshore Jack ups

  • Drawing and design of well equipments

  • Drawing and design of ROV (remotely operated vehicle)

  • Drawing and design of natural gas storage tank(Horton sphere)

  • Drawing and Designing of Mud tank

  • Drawing and design of on/offshore pipeline.

  • Drawing and design of rotary system in drilling

The different objectives and outcomes of this Lab are given as follows:-

  • To train the students to understand the concept of designing Equipments for Petroleum Exploration LIST OF EXPERIMENTS

  • Design of rotary pump / valve.

  • Design of pressure / reaction vessel.
